Computer Overload

Do you Tweet? I was sort of half-way trying to keep up with bloggers and writers on Twitter for a while, but I’d rather just get the posts via RSS, email or plain ol’ searching for them.

Then I noticed my sister was following some very interesting people on her Twitter. My interest was piqued and started building a Tweet Deck and breaking them up into groups…and so on. And then I just sort of stopped. Too much effort.

The other day I read a comment to an article in, I think it was The Times (don’t quote me, it was at a doctor’s office) magazine. Apparently an article had been written about the Twitter Revolution. She didn’t like it.

What I got from her comment was that all this constant input into the brain without giving it time to process was going to cause our brains to implode. She might have a point.

I’m in my mid-forties. I remember when I got my first computer…I think I was pushing 30. Prior to that I was a stay-at-home mom and part-time student. Most of my information came from the newspaper or my friends. Then in a matter of months…information overload! I was learning DOS-based programs, having conversations on bulletin boards, emailing and ftp’ing files and then Oh my! Guess what happened next?

The gui (graphical user interface) Internet interface was created and all of a sudden there were forums and the articles and searches and so many things to look at and do. And to know…

I remember, very distinctly, feeling a great big huge sense of …

“oh-no-how-will-I-ever-read-it-all?!!”

And you just wonder why I have cognitive issues?
